Preventing and Combating Intersectional Violence towards LBTIQ Women and Non-Binary Persons

Project: “Preventing and Combating Intersectional Violence towards LBTIQ Women and Non-Binary Persons”
Reporting period: December 2024 – June 2025
Promoted by: Bilitis Resource Center Foundation

This report presents the findings of a study by the Bilitis Resource Center Foundation on gender-based violence against lesbian, bisexual, trans, intersex and non-binary people in Bulgaria, funded by EL*C and the European Union. The research combines an online survey (237 respondents), 14 in-depth interviews, a focus group with legal, social and psychological support professionals, an analysis of Bulgaria’s legal framework, and a review of good practices from EU countries. Findings show widespread and largely unreported violence — particularly against trans, non-binary and intersex people — worsened by a legal framework that still excludes same-sex partnerships from domestic violence protections, and by inconsistent institutional support. The report closes with concrete recommendations on legislative reform, specialized services, professional training, and accountability mechanisms tailored to LBTI+ people in Bulgaria.
