Safe Nightlife: A Presentation on Gender-Based Violence in Bulgarian Nightlife – Report
This presentation by the Kikimora Foundation and Queer Varna Foundation introduces “Safe Nightlife,” Bulgaria’s first initiative addressing drink-spiking, sexual assault and physical aggression in nightlife venues. It shares findings from a national sociological survey comparing the general population to LGBTI+ respondents — who report far higher rates of fear and victimization (e.g., 56% of LGBTI+ respondents fear sexual assault vs. 10% nationally; 47% have experienced it vs. 7% nationally) — alongside detailed information on spiking substances (alcohol, GHB, benzodiazepines, ketamine and others), how to recognize symptoms, and how to respond as a bystander, venue staff, or security. It includes two realistic case studies with role-based response guidance, plus practical info on emergency contacts, filing a police report, and where to get forensic testing in Bulgaria. The project also runs venue staff training and free trauma-informed support groups (in partnership with Animus Association).
