Research: Lived Realities of Black, Racialized, Roma and Central Asian lesbians* in the EU

Published by EL*C, this report presents the findings of a groundbreaking research project on the lived experiences of Black, racialized, Roma and Central Asian lesbians in the EU (2024–2025). Its first insights were shared on a webinar in December last year and on April 25th during the Lesbian Conference in Rome. It sheds light on the intersectional experiences of LBQ and non-binary individuals who face multiple forms of discrimination across Europe.

Drawing on 55 interviews with participants from diverse backgrounds (15 identified as Central Asian, 15 as Roma9, and 25 as BPOC, aged from 18 to above 55), this research highlights the everyday struggles related to accessing employment, housing, healthcare, and political participation. The report specifically explores the compounding impact of racism, xenophobia, lesbophobia, and transphobia on those who are often marginalized both within and outside the LGBTQI+ community.

Key findings reveal:

  • Systemic racism and legal barriers continue to block racialized lesbians* from fair employment and stable housing.

  • Many are forced to remain in the closet at work or face harassment and job insecurity.

  • Access to safe and inclusive healthcare is severely limited, particularly for trans and migrant participants.

  • Grassroots activism and community support networks are often the only safe spaces available.

The report also includes concrete policy recommendations to address cross-cutting barriers and improve inclusion and protection at both national and international levels.
